Sjoring let out another yelp and fell to his rear, whimpering, as Žaneta walked over to Toryn who, upon inspection, appeared to be choking on blood he was coughing up. She had broken so many ribs on his left side that several must’ve punctured his lung. Every breath he took suffocated him more and more—Žaneta knew he was dead.

She then turned around to Sjoring and knelt in front of him. “Why’d you do this? Who sent you?” she breathed, strangely calm and deadly serious in the face of the attack.

Sjoring, sweating profusely from the pain, looked up at her as he winced. “That man on the floor behind you offered m-more than I could turn down,” he gasped.

Žaneta tilted her head to look at him and asked, “Did he pay you?”

Sjoring shook his head. “No. Not yet.”

“Seems like most people who obligate others without a deposit often never expect to have to pay their debts,” she said, giving him a hard stare.

“My leg’s done in, and I can’t feel my hands… I don’t think I’ll be able to pay for much of anything from here on.” He began to shiver.

“My husband was murdered, and my children were stolen. I will find them and leave your employer just like your friend over there. But… I’m not going to kill you,” Žaneta finished coldly, tearing the blade from his leg and stabbing it into the floor beside her.

The bar was quiet, aside from the bellows of pain coming from Sjoring. Žaneta concentrated hard and brought her hands close together. Drawing energy, she channeled her healing light and watched as it started closing Sjoring’s wounds. But she stopped just short of the injuries healing completely, leaving scars on his arms and leg. The cantina was completely silent. Every person who had watched her lay waste to the two men saw the magnificence she was also capable of.

Žaneta looked at him like a disappointed parent does a misbehaving child, then finished with, “Do better.” She stood and looked down at him while he stared at his arms in disbelief.

Graydin and Calette gawked at the scene with wide eyes then met Žaneta’s stare. “Let’s go,” she said. Calette opened the door with Žaneta behind her, as Graydin quickly dropped money on the bar counter.

Walking to the outer doors of the Waistworks, Graydin was full of questions. “That… that… I’ve never seen anything like that! That Nord I’ve seen around and thought he looked to be a tough one, but…” he stuttered.

Žaneta abruptly stopped in the hallway and looked to her side, with her hand raised—signaling him to be quiet. “Please stop. I didn’t enjoy any of that. I embarrassed him and healed him. Hopefully, he’ll choose other avenues for income from now on,” she replied as she continued walking.

Graydin scoffed. “I doubt it. Hired muscle doesn’t know how to do regular work. But I’m sure he, and all the others, are going to be spreading the word about you.”

“Great,” she said sarcastically. “Notoriety just brings challengers.
